Myths Of Graphic Design

Creating A Killer Logo

In Blogging by Michigan Creative

When you think of any brand, what is the first thing that pops into your head? Probably their logo, right? Then it’s certainly doing its job.

Creating a logo for your brand is one of the most important things you can do. It establishes a visual connection and makes your brand more relevant and recognizable. When creating a logo, there are many aspects that you should consider in order to make sure your logo is a good fit for your brand.

Simplicity

One of the most important things to think about when creating your logo is simplicity. When it comes to logos, keeping it simple is the way to go, that way it is easily recognizable to anyone who looks at it. The function of the logo is to grab people’s attention when they see it, and that they are easily able to recognize the company that it represents. Think about the McDonald’s logo. Everyone you know will most likely recognize that logo on its own and all it is is a big yellow M! A logo doesn’t have to be complex to be memorable, it just has to match the brand.

Appropriate

Before creating a logo for your company, it’s good to know what that company does and why. You want your logo to be relevant and match the brand behind your company. This may be an extreme example, but look at Apple. Their logo is obviously an apple and matches their brand very well. Now, it would be pretty odd if Apple’s logo was a lion wouldn’t it? It would be confusing to consumers and people wouldn’t understand the connection between the Apple brand and a picture of a lion. They would see the logo and not immediately think of Apple, like we do today when we see the current Apple logo. This is why it is so important to make your logo relevant and appropriate to your brand.

Avoid Crazy Fonts

A common mistake when designing a logo is the use of over the top fonts. Like we talked about above, simplicity is normally the best route to go and sometimes certain fonts just have too much going on. Unless you decide to use only text as your logo, it might be a good idea to try out more simplistic fonts that compliment other aspects of your logo. This will ensure that the logo has a clean look and is easy to read and remember!

Sketch Out Ideas

Some people like to go into their design programs to start working right away, but sketching logo designs on paper first can be good practice. Sketching is nice because you can jot down ideas as you come up with them, which is much easier than it would be to make each of them in Illustrator or Photoshop. This allows you to get many ideas down on paper quickly. Then you can dive into your design software with all of these visual ideas right  in front of you which will make the process easier and more efficient.

Bring It All Together

Remember that the purpose of your logo is to help your business. It should be easily recognizable, appropriate in terms of matching the brand of your business, and attractive yet creatively simple. Combine all of these things together with a little bit of work, and creating a killer logo for you company will be a breeze!
